Lewis University volunteered to partner with Will County because Lewis already collects food scraps on their campus and sends them for composting. Like Will County, the University wants to encourage more residents, businesses and schools to start composting.  The County Environmental Educator will have a table with children's activities and composting information. Will County is happy to offer residents a chance to give their Jack-O-Lanterns a second life through composting! Lewis physics students construct two CATAPULTs  and provide a safe viewing distance for chidten and adults to watch their fruit fly. People are invited to enjoy the fun and thrilling spectacle!

A drive-thru document destruction service will also be offered to pair the shredding of paper with the shredding of pumpkins! Limit of 3 bank boxes per vehicle.

Electronics recycling is also offered. Limit 2 TVs per vehicle.

Everyone is invited to bring their carved or painted pumpkins to Lewis University's "W" parking lot on Saturday, Nov. 2 (the Saturday after Halloween) from 9am to Noon!

Naked Pumpkins Only! No candles, bags or boxes!

This is a chance for a decorative natural item to be recycled, as all the pumpkins collected will be taken to a site to be mixed and composted. Eventually they will become a highly nutritious soil supplement, feeding future crops, gardens - or perhaps a new pumpkin patch!  Be part of the fun and bring your family or friends to see who's pumpkin flies the highest!

PUMPKIN SUGGESTIONS:

When decorating: Display it as is or carve. If you wish to paint, use water based paint. If washing to preserve longer when carved, please use vinigar so wildlife that might nibble on it are safe.

Compost at home or at an event. It may be placed in a compost bin, buried in your yard, set out for animals or taken to our collection and catapulted to send it to a commercial compost site. Pumpkins, like all fruits and vegetable s contain nutrients and minerals that will fertilize your yard, garden or the commercial compost.

Consider cooking your pumpkin. There are 2 types, one for pies and the majority provide seeds that can be seasoned and baked for a healthy snack.

Lastly, if you want to grow a few pumpkins, save some seeds (uncooked) and plant them in the Spring!

COMPOST DIRECTION:

Fall is the best time to start a compost. Please click this link to our website composting page where you may learn more about how to compost leaves and veggie scraps in your backyard.
