Ways of Reducing Energy Use:
There are simple things you can do every day to save on your utility bills. Some don't even require the purchase of anything. For instance:
- Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120°F. You're heating that water all day and night, so this will save energy around the clock.
- If you use a dishwasher, run it only when it is full, use the economy setting if there is one, and air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle.
- Turn off your computer, monitor, and printer if you're leaving the room or not using them. Even short durations such as the time away to eat a meal can add up.
- Take short showers (5 minutes is a good goal).
- Wash clothes in cold water, they will get just as clean as if washed in warm or hot.
- When drying clothes use the economy setting; or better yet, use a drying rack or clothes line.
- Next time you go to the store, you may want to purchase a few things to reduce your energy use.
- Install a programmable thermostat to keep your house comfortably warm in the winter and comfortably cool in the summer.
- Use compact fluorescent light bulbs with the ENERGY STAR® label.
- Purchase a few power strips and plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into them; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use (TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power).
Look for the ENERGY STAR label on home appliances and products. ENERGY STAR products meet strict efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency. Visit www.energysavers.gov for more energy-saving ideas.
