Will County Green Roof Project

During the summer of 2010, Will County used EECBG funds to install a "green roof" on top of the existing County Office Building.  Formerly a Sears building, the County purchased this building in 1985 and has made many energy efficiency improvements to it over the years.  This project required a structural engineer to inspect the roof to determine the amount of weight that it could hold. Unlike most buildings, this building was orginially intended to have another story added in the future. Since that had never happened, the roof was capable of holding "tree"mendous weight (basically we could have planted trees on it, if desired).  However, staff also considered maintenance and accessibility.  It was determined that lightweight material be used and that the plants themselves be extremely tolerant of dry, hot conditions to keep maintenance at a minimum.
